Mental Health California™ is proud to be an official, certified trainer of Mental Health First Aid™, an evidence-based, in-person training program with proven ability to teach individuals how to recognize and respond to the warning signs of mental illness and substance use disorders and link people with appropriate treatment and support. Mental Health First Aid™ increases the understanding that mental illnesses are real, common, and treatable. Originating in Australia in 2001, Mental Health First Aid™ has expanded to more than 23 countries worldwide. It is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).
From the Mental Health First Aid™ website - Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid™ training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives. Mental Health First Aiders™ learn a single 5-step strategy that includes assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other supports. Participants are also introduced to risk factors and warning signs for mental health or substance use problems, engage in experiential activities that build understanding of the impact of illness on individuals and families, and learn about evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies.
